Above & Below Grade
A good drainage system often includes effective surface water management as well as below grade drainage solutions. Surface grade, slope and control features contain and divert surface runoff during periods of rain. Subsurface drainage systems work behind the scenes to pull the water table down within an area, and provide dryer soils with better aeration to support healthy plant or crop growth.

Poor drainage can be caused by improper surface grade or lack of slope to allow the surface water to proceed to a drainage way. Sometimes underground features or soil horizons can cause an elevated water table to persist. Other times the problem may be a constant feed of water, a spring or localized hydraulic pressure that causes water to continually infiltrate and saturate an area.
